I suffered for years with hyperthyroidism without knowing it. My thyroid was breaking down and I always thought I was overdoing things and was just tired, and I could eat anything and not put weight on, until one day, I noticed a lump in my throat, it literally came up overnight. I went to the doctor as soon as I could and that started my long, long
road to recovery.

In September 2007, I was doing my nightly ritual of teeth and face cleaning, when I noticed

in the mirror, a lump in my throat. I instantly knew it was my thyroid as I was a medical receptionist before the kids arrived, but still went to get the medical book and jumped on the internet to check out the in's and out's of the thyroid. Unfortunately, it was a Friday night and I had to wait till Monday to get in to see the doctor, who fortunately, saw me the same day when I told him I had a lump in my throat.
When I was with my doctor he confirmed that it was indeed an enlarged Thyroid and he started me on some medication P.T.U and I would need to see an endocrinologist. There
started my year of hell with many blood tests and visits to doctors.

I thought I would keep a diary of how it all went over time, and I used my mobile phone ( the notes section) to keep record of events, which is why all the entries are in a short text style, I only had a certain number of letters to use.
I started a rating system of how I felt everyday, ratings
were from 1 - 10
1- Chronic, feeling really bad and couldn't get out of bed.
5 - Okayish, but aching and tired
10 - Fantastic ( there weren't many of these)

The start of my diary
Thursday 27th September 2007
Saw my endocrinologist for the first time. Not sure about him, a typical specialist with a bow tie. I guess he knows what he is doing. He upped my dose of P.T. U's

The doctors at the hospital only send me home again not knowing what is causing the attacks. Very helpful...Not!

I got ten hours sleep last night and feel okayish, sleep and rest is obviously a good thing to keep feeling good.

The whole 30 page diary is included in the book.

I wrote this because I really feel for anyone who has been diagnosed with Graves disease,

it isn't an easy thing to deal with, I just want to let know that your symptoms, whether they are like mine, be it better or worse, that it isn't your imagination. Let your family read this and they will know your not well and aren't putting it on. I had trouble at first even before being diagnosed, with people thinking I was lazy or just whingeing, and it really is upsetting to think people don't believe how bad you feel.

Here is a yummy recipe from the book for a healthy smoothie.
